Typophile Battle 28

An exercise for Typophile Battle 28: design the word 'defiant' where the stem width is 1/2 of the x-height.

Dusting off the Cursive Sans

I pulled this one out of the closet the other day, dusted it off, and put it back on the workbench. I started this type right after I finished Dear Sarah at the beginning of the OpenType revolution. I'm not sure why it got put on the back burner. The concept: A cursive / Italic / Roman super family, where the cursive gets top billing. This is the first time I'm showing it publicly.

Aperture >> Apertura

The current thinking for the title: "Apertura". I like the subtle reference toward Futura, the grand-daddy of geometrics. Here is a contact sheet showing where the specimen is going:

Grant Avenue Specimen

Grant Avenue is getting closer to launch. Here is what the specimen is looking like:

Camera Obscura

I added small caps and old style numerals to the geometric. I'm just debugging now. Hopefully I'll be able to get this one out the door soon.

Three Envelopes

Most pieces of paper I come across get letters scrawled all over them. Cleaning out my junk drawer yesterday I found these three pay stub envelopes.

Grant Avenue in use

Here is an example of Grant Avenue in use, in this case for a wedding invitation ( congratulations Brad and Angie ).

Doublewide featured on Typophile

Doublewide is the featured font right now on Typophile. It's funny how wide it really is. Only about one or two words make it on every line on the home page. See Doublewide in action.

Zebra Garamond

This is the quick Garamond that I drew as the base for Zebramond. I'm not a big fan of redrawing dead peoples' work, but I've found that redrawing types by eye without tracing can yield some interesting results. If nothing else, it's a good way to understand a particular typeface.

Zebramond beta download

I'm weighing whether to finish this font (see the last post for more about how it came to be). It's interesting in a freak show kind of way, and I'm interested to hear what people think of it. In the mean time, here is a public beta. It's rough, with only rudimentary spacing and kerning. Only the upper and lower case characters are supported here. As usual you can use it, but don't publish the font files or try to sell it.
